Celebrating Colombia’s Wildlife: A Photography Roundup of Protected Animals

At Women for Conservation, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire action and protect our planet’s biodiversity. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce our latest Wildlife Photography Roundup, showcasing the extraordinary species safeguarded by our work in partnership with ProAves Colombia. Thanks to the dedication of our local conservationists and the support of donors like you, Colombia’s most vulnerable wildlife continues to thrive.

Environmental Education: Inspiring the Next Generation

Education is at the heart of conservation, and Women for Conservation is proud to support grassroots women’s efforts in cultivating a deep respect for nature among Colombian youth. Through a variety of hands-on initiatives, we are fostering the next generation of environmental stewards:

  • School Visits & Amigos de las Aves: Women for Conservation and ProAves regularly visit schools to engage students with conservation education programs. Our Amigos de las Aves initiative connects young minds to the wonders of birds and biodiversity, instilling an early love for nature.
  • Forest Guard Training & Wildlife Monitoring: Across 27 ProAves nature reserves—many of which were founded with the help of our own Sara Inés Lara— we partner with ProAves to lead forest guard training and weekly wildlife monitoring programs. These efforts provide critical data to protect endangered species and maintain healthy ecosystems.
  • The Rana Chiva & Reinita Chiva Buses: These mobile conservation classrooms travel across Colombia, reaching remote communities and educating thousands of schoolchildren about wildlife protection, sustainable practices, and the importance of conservation. These colorful, interactive buses make learning accessible and fun, ensuring that even the most rural communities have access to environmental education.
A Week of Wildlife Wonders: Featured Photography

This week’s photography roundup includes breathtaking images of some of the rarest and most iconic species that Women for Conservation’s and ProAves work to protect.

The Yellow-Eared Parrot (Ognorhynchus icterotis)

The Yellow-Eared Parrot (Ognorhynchus icterotis): Once on the brink of extinction, this vibrant parrot was saved through Women for Conservation and ProAves’ dedicated conservation efforts, led by none other than our founder, Sara Inés Lara. Thanks to habitat restoration and protective measures, its population has made a remarkable recovery.

The Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera)

Forest guards conduct regular monitoring of trails and wildlife multiple times a week, accurately recording the time and location of each sighting. This meticulous tracking of nocturnal and diurnal species, as demonstrated in the photos below, helps provide invaluable data to guide conservation strategies and habitat protection efforts.

These images not only celebrate the beauty of Colombia’s wildlife but also serve as a powerful reminder of why conservation matters. We invite you to share these photos, spread awareness, and support our mission to protect endangered species and their habitats in Colombia and around the world.
